Experiential Learning Design

In collaboration with Experiential Learning Design Institute
During the COIVD-19 pandemic, Professor Colin Beard and us decided to experiment with engaging and sharing with the facilitation and training community online, about Experiential Learning. We did a teaser video on Facebook to share about this endeavour.

And then in 2023 and 2024, we continued with the Learning Design Masterclass.

What we believe and advocate for
Most meaningful learning is experience-based. And experiential learning is about :
  • learning with experiences
  • learning through experiences
  • sense-making with experiences
What we noticed, observed and received feedback on
Most people look at experiential learning as putting activities into their programmes, and then expect people to make the connections on their own.
or
They place activities into their programmes, without the clarity of the intention of how might the learners make meaning from it, and then all the activities do, is raise energy and fun, and breaks away from the lecture-style training that they conduct, and end up having to tell participants what they are supposed to have learnt from the activities.
And then they use the term "experiential learning" as part of what their programmes deliver, and then change the whole meaning and intention of what experiential learning in facilitation is meant to do : to help make it easy/easier for us to learn.
The Experiential Learning Design Masterclass is our response to the above.
We resonate with Professor Colin Beard with what he advocates for :
"Let the Learners Experience the Learning."
Through the books that he has written, and the sessions that the Professor has conducted, he emphasises, amongst many other things, paying attention to how a learner learns, and then design the programme according to that preference and approach to learning that the learner is inclined towards.
Interest in Experiential Learning and Experiential Learning Design took on a greater interest globally, since we resumed life after the COVID-19 pandemic, and Professor Colin Beard started being invited globally to share, speak and conduct sessions, to allow more to experience the learning, and to be able to design programmes to support their learners to experience the learning.

At the end of 2024, the Experiential Learning Design Institute was launched in Hong Kong (https://www.experientiallearningdesign.org/), and we are launching an office in Singapore in 2025.
Together with the launch of the Institute, we have also developed the Masterclass to serve a larger audience of participants, through the Certification Levels.
Level #1 Certification Course :
9th March 2025 - 2nd run in Hong Kong!
18th March 2025 - inaugural course in Malaysia!
(Tentative) 19th March 2025 - inaugural course in Indonesia!
Level #2 Certification Course :
14th & 15th March 2025 - inaugural course in Singapore and the World!
As long as you have completed the Learning Design Masterclass or the Level #1 Certification Course in Hong Kong, you are welcome to join in the Level #2 in Singapore!
What is in the Experiential Learning Design Level #2 Certification Course?
Level #1 was the start of your journey in becoming an architect of design.
Level #2 is about Creating New Educational Programming.
And this requires the application of the art and science of design​.
The art and science of experiential learning designs refer to :
  • the science - as being related to planning and structures, and systematic work in the development of learning needs, learning objectives and outcomes.
  • the art - we mean the creative choreography that is required to transform the objectives and outcomes into a programme that has shape and flow, and embeds learning research to maximise learning for EVERYONE (HOLISTIC).
The science is more structured and systematic whereas the art is the choreography, and it is more organic and less structured.
In Level #2, you will be introduced to more experiences that will help you to :
  1. build on the Level #1 skills and knowledge that you have learnt and developed, and
  2. introduce completely new practical design principles.
These new design principles will be illustrated through a range of practical hands-on examples that will have a topic focus on for very different areas of our work, so as to cater for a wide range of backgrounds of people attending our courses.
